Changing Ethiopia

Ethiopia is opening to the world in an unprecedented way. The capital of Addis Ababa offers five-star luxury hotels to international guests. The Sheraton or the Hilton hotels accommodate businesspeople, politicians or show biz stars from

all over the world. The construction industry is booming. Everywhere shops, malls, and hotels are being built. The International Airport of Addis Ababa presents itself in impressive size and architecture, as well as with a recognizable pretension to competitive growth. Visitors are surprised of the cosmopolitanism, friendliness, and active nature of the Ethiopians. Most of all, the young people are self-confident and modern, without letting traditional values fall into oblivion.

The commercially interested guest can already find numerous western European companies, which have recognized the unusual possibilities and co-operate with the financially and politically responsible powers.

Considerable investments of foreign companies and sponsors support the positive development of infrastructure, telecommunications, and IT. The educational standards continuously rise.  The University of Addis Ababa offers education chances of all faculties to her students.  Currently, 14 more universities are in planning, or under construction, nation-wide.

EMPORA, Focus of the Project: Large-scale grain production of premium durum wheat and malting barley in affilitated contract cultivation with smallholders in the region.

DURUM (hard wheat) contains many essential nutrients, above all a very high percentage of protein, and therefore possesses very special cooking and baking qualities. Hence, the use of high-quality DURUM is indispensible for high-quality pasta products of international standards.

The DURUM cultivation requires very special climatic and geologic conditions, which are present in particular in its native country, the Ethiopian highlands.

Worldwide, DURUM production has a share of merely 10% of the world production of wheat in general, and in spite of rising demands its production is rapidly declining in the established DURUM producing countries (e.g. Italy and Canada)   - above all because of adverse climatic reasons.

The import demands of the EU alone are estimated at approx. two million tons per year for the coming years.

Because of the forced commercial cultivation of DURUM in Ethiopia and the intended export of 80% of the production an, essential improvement of the Ethiopian foreign trade balance can be derived, which is strongly in favour of our Project.  An additional positive factor is the especially attractive world price of DURUM, which lays currently 100-120% above that of soft wheat.
